9 Ton Sloop
Wumpus (2)
Wumpus (3)

This is a reluctant sale of 'Wumpus' - a classic 9 ton Hillyard constructed in 1965 for my grandfather.

She was sold to another owner in 1978 and spent her intervening years in Jersey (even making a transatlantic trip and cruising the med) before I bought her back in 2012.

Over the last five years Wumpus has been subject to a meticulous and painstaking restoration by Nick Gates of Emsworth.  He posted a YouTube video of some of the work which you can view here. She looks gorgeous as a result, and following all of this work her woodwork is most likely the best example on any 9 ton currently on the water.

Sadly, it has cost rather more than expected with £40,000 spent so far and I do not have the money to pay for the final things I would have liked to have done to be confident to take my young family out. She could do with a proper engine overhaul or replacement, an overhaul of electrics and work to the interior.  None of these things in themselves are in particularly poor state.  The starter motor needs replacing, but I am happy to do this at my own expense for the new owner.  The engine does work quite reliably but is an old model fitted in 1982.  The electrics also function fine but I would have liked to fit modern communications systems.  And the interior is in good condition but I would have liked to have bought new cushions and made it all a bit more homely. Likewise the rigging and sails could probably do with replacing in the next few years - but again not a pressing job.

As with any wooden boat it is the 'nasties' that lurk beneath that are the most worrying things.  Wumpus does not have any of this - and the outstanding work are all straightforward jobs where costs are more defined.

I have all the invoices and can supply detail of all of the work carried out to date - along with a survey carried out for me when I bought her in 2012 - which will show all the important points have been addressed.

Some of the big jobs include - Mast fully repaired, new spreaders.  New toerails, guard rails.  Deck essentially replaced.  Cabinsides and coachroofs replaced, new deck fittings.

Inside she has the classic centre cockpit layout - aft cabin with double berth & heads, comfortable full height saloon area featuring galley with paraffin stove, and seating which converts to another double berth if required, and another double in the fore cabin.

Please contact me for additional information about the work undertaken or if you have any other questions or queries.

She is currently lying on a mooring in Lymington Harbour, Hampshire.  If you did not want to take her by sea I am happy to pay for her lift out and scrub so you can then transport her by road.

Asking price is £19,995 - but will consider reasonable offers.

Hillyard Yawl 43' (1947)
Request for offers

This striking vessel was built at the Hillyard yard, it has beautiful low slung lines and a heavy wooden hull, pitchpine on oak, with many sailing years ahead of it still. An attractive strong bow leads to that lovely low slung design. The side decks are wide with solid toe rails.

The deep semi-open cockpit with steering and engine controls is amidships. You can easily seat six people here in all weathers. The cockpit has an entrance to a roomy aft cabin. The pointed transom has a transom hung rudder. The engine has been placed next to the main cabin entrance below deck. The steps to the main cabin and the cabin itself have been attractively panelled and have original brass work, with a fine inlaid table. Further back is a recently fitted but stylish galley with brass pump and carpentry with a chart table on the starboard side. Also on the starboard side is some room for an extra berth. Toilet in the bow together with storage space ( that could also serve as berths). Recently installed new keel stepped spruce wooden masts and new main mast step, the bow and rudder have been restored too.

The boat has a perfectly running 3-cyl Gardner (1968) 60 Hp diesel  engine. A Heatpol diesel heater, three burner stove with oven, new toilet. 7 berths. Electric anchor winch, bronze winches, three fore sails, main and mizzen.Autopilot, depth sounder, compass and GPS. The beautiful teak deck is covered with thick sections. The cabin, electricity and the cabin roof needs attention. The ship is reasonably dry. A beautiful classic vessel. And an unique Hillyard design.

 Dimensions: Length 13 m, width: 3,50, depth: 1.70, 21 Ton.

Columbine 1
Built in 1960, in mahogany. Long external iron ballast keel.  She is a beautiful example of a Hillyard from the famous David Hillyard's yard in Littlehampton.
She is very well presented and has benefited for large number of upgrades in recent years such as, New Beta engine, new cooker, new heads, Raymarine i70 display, Garmin DSC VHF and pressurised hot & cold water.
Viewing is highly recommended as she must be one of the nicest examples currently on the market. She is afloat in Birdham Marina and ready to sail away.

C J Nutton, vendor

I was in contact with you a number of years ago requesting an advert for my 6 ton Hillyard Spartina. Last year I managed to find someone to take on the project, but unfortunately I have recently heard that the new owner has not been keeping up mooring payments and now the yard are planning to destroy Spartina in two weeks time.

I am contacting you in the hope that someone in your organisation may be willing to take on Spartina for free and therefore save her from being destroyed.

The yacht is in Quayside marina, Quayside rd, Bitterne, Southampton, SO18 1AD. The yard owner Mr Tom Mayhew can be contacted at 07809 152535 or by email

Or alternatively I can be contacted on 07727 427369 or email any queries.

Spartina has been stood ashore a number of years now but she is still structurally sound and most definitely worth saving. I can help with getting her lifted onto a trailer ready for transport, but unfortunately I am not in a position where I could take the yacht on myself. She is a 1952 double ender built from mahogany on oak.

I hope you are able to help in this matter. The yacht can be viewed at any time.

 Kind Regards
 Steve Goatley.

She has had a very good professional survey in April, hull, spars, deck & fittings ‘in good order’, sails serviceable, standing rigging to be replaced in 2115

Health reasons force sale sadly – after nearly 20 yrs. of Hillyards’.  Price £2,500 or v.n.o.

Please could you let your members know of fittings being available from a 1959 five ton Hillard being broken up in Exmouth, Devon.
Charlotte's mast is still sound, as are the sails, says its owner, a local boatbuilder. All retrievable fittings, such as propeller, fairleads, winches and blocks are being stripped from the yacht, hopefully for reuse in a similar yacht undergoing restoration. If interested please contact and your message will be passed immediately to the owner. Many thanks, Marcia Sands

I currently own Spray, which I believe was the first motor launch built by Hillyard in 1925, so something of a key boat in the Hillyard story..   It appears to have been commissioned for naval use during WWII.
It is now unused and ashore [near Plymouth] and I am keen to sell it, not least to avoid an historic boat falling beyond repair.
Spray is a 30’ launch with 2 berths and cockpit space for about 10.  It was in commission until last year, and the engine [now a Nanni diesel] was substantially rebuilt just 4-5 years ago.   However the exterior needs tlc – the deck needs some resealing, there are probably a couple of planks to replace and brightwork needs revarnishing.   It needs some time by a person with basic boat maintenance skills to bring it back to sound use but I’m not aware that there is anything substantially wrong.
I wonder if, through your association networks, you could alert anyone who may be interested in viewing Spray with a view to buying at a realistic ‘quick sale’ price.
Some recent photos are attached for information.
Prospective purchasers should phone Scott Brown at 01752 851679 or email him at

"Anne" - 4 Ton
Hello all Hillyard - enthusiasts
Next to my Vertue in Kampen (Netherlands) there is a very nice and clean 4-to Hillyard "Anne" ( 6,50 x 2,20 x 1,10 m) to be seen and for sale. She is afloat, but in need of painting and caulking. She is empty, her joinery had been taken out, but is to 75 % existing and could easily be reinstalled. Her plankwork is pitchpine and is sound. From the inside she is very clean.
There is a 7 hp 2-stroke Vire engin to be installed. "Anne" has a nice good teakdeck and mahogany- superstructure.
She is  gaff rigged with bouwsprit and as-new sails. Mast, gaff and gig varnished and in good order, also all her rigging. The hatches are as new. There is some work to be done to the small deep cockpit, i.e. the cockpit sole.
All together: after the words of the head Mr. Bakker of the renowned "Kroes" boatyard, where "Anne" is moored, during winter ashore under cover, "Anne" is absolutely sound, but needs some reconditioning.
"Anne" is owned by the Kroes- yard. They ask 3000 Euro, which means about 2.600 British pounds or maybe a bit less, a bargain indeed.
Please contact Mr. Bakker ( , there you will see the advertisement under "te koop" together with 3 fotos of "Anne"). His mail address:, his telephone number: 0031 383312684
Greetings from
Rudolf Grimm

 Lady Corinne -12 Ton

Lady Corinne
For Sale - Our cherished 1939 12 Ton Hilyard Ketch "Lady Corinne"

A beautiful 45 foot overall double ended, carvel planked hull with
Pitch Pine planking on Oak Frames she was started in Littlehampton  in
1939 and the hull was completed before the yard turned its attention
to the war effort.  During the next few years she lay in a mud berth
where the salt water preserved her timbers until she was finished and
commissioned in 1945 She was the first boat to leave the Hilyard yard
after the war.
She has had a colourful life including many years as an RAF training
ship after being bought to replace one of the windfall yachts gained
from the Luftwaffe which was dashed on the rocks somewhere off the
French coast.  We returned to Chichester last year after a 16 day
Transatlantic crossing from the Cape Verde Islands to St Lucia in the
Caribbean after which followed an extended cruise around the Islands.
The final chapter saw us enter her for the Antigua Classics in 2010
where we achieved 2nd in class and second place in the Privately
Maintained Concours de Elegance.  In spite of her years this Lady is
still turning heads - a true beauty she really is a gem and is much
admired everywhere she goes getting praise from lots of passing boats.
She has a ton of solid Douglas Fir for her main mast together with a
beautiful 8' Bowsprit and a short Bumpkin.

Blink Bonnie

The current owner of Blink Bonnie writes;

I have a 9 ton Hillyard in need of restoration, I have had the boat assesed by a professional wooden boat builder and he feels the boat is well worth restoring. I have all the bits with the exception of the mast and would be willing to pass the boat on to some one who could complete the project. I have just taken a new job and have another boat so I now realise I will never be able to complete the Hillyard, which is ashore in a yard near Chichester, it seems a shame to see such a lovely boat go to ruin, so if you know of anyone looking I would be glad to here.

Currently ashore at Paines Boatyard at the top of Thorney Island.

Joline For Sale

I am the current owner of 1922 3 ton hillyard, Nanouk.
I am a shipwright by profession and I was going to restore her properly.
However, I have got into between rock and a hard place very suddenly due to client running out of money.
So if you know anyone who wants to rescue her as a project, please get in contact.
The hull is mostly sound, cabin top was removed for restoration which is partly done.
The boat is complete with all original bronze hardware, anchor and near new set of sails. No engine.
Due to mounting yard fees I'm trying to find a new owner for her but I can only allow another week for it.
Should you know anyone interested in taking her off my hands for estimated price of the hardware only, around £750-1000 my phone number is 07907284121
This offer is valid until 10th of June. After that the boat will be cut up and the hardware sold on eBay to cover yard fees.
Collection from pembroke or storage by new owner possible at the yard.
Deadline 10th June.
Best regards Juha

This boat has been lovingly restored, under cover, in Cornwall, regrettably personal circumstances force me to sell prior to completion of the internal fit.

The external restoration has been carried out to the highest standard, with complete replacement of the wood from the Gunwales up. Inside the woodwork has been sanded and painted and some frames repaired, the interior has been fully painted. The hull is in excellent condition and was fully chaulked.

The work so far includes;

New Deck, New Rubbing Strakes, New Hatch, New Windows, New Mast, Long keel removed and shot blasted, New Gun Metal keel bolts, and a completely renovated engine refurbished and installed by Cellar Marine Ltd, Stern Tube and glands by Norris of Isleworth.

The interior includes a factory refurbished Baby Blake Toilet. All wood inside and out was sanded down to bare wood and repainted/treated by Blakes Ltd Products. Most of the original fittings have been retained, except for the rudder, which along with the stainless steel fittings, is completely new.

All that is required to finish the project is the Standing rigging, Sails, and some carpentry in the cabin, and minor electric's.

Yacht was fully seaworthy 4 years ago. Has been sat on hard since then.
Vessel ashore lying Southampton. Quayside Marina, River Itchen

As I am sure you know my 6 ton Hillyard "Spartina" has been advertised with you for a number of years now. Unfortunately I have not yet met anyone I feel is serious enough about restoring her, hence why she is still on the market. I am now however in a position where I must find a good home for her as I am going abroad to work. So would you please amend my advert to say the yacht has been stored ashore for 8 years, she is a restoration project and I am willing to accept offers from anyone serious in restoring her to former glory. Due to her storage ashore there is some major work required to her Stem and Stern post and also to the deadwood around rudder. The rest of the repairs needed are more minor and can in my opinion be carried out by most people with basic skills. Her planking is in good condition, apart from 3 areas of damage caused by being badly shored up one winter. The interior woodwork is still sound. I was recently quoted around £7000 to have the work done and Spartina refloated. So I feel Spartina is still a viable restoration project for somebody with a higher skill level in yacht repairs than I myself have. I have attached some photos taken yesterday which will hopefully give a good idea of her current condition.

Thanks very much for your help.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I wondering if it would be possible for us to advertise the following

Many thanks,
