Currently lying at the Sussex Yacht Club, Trooper II is a 13 ton ketch built by David Hillyard in 1970. She is constructed of mahogany on oak frames - 38' LOA, a 10'2" beam and a 5' draft. With a comfortable centre iroko wheelhouse and generous space down below (5 berths across 3 cabins with a max 6'6" of headroom) she has been a much-loved family cruiser for her current owner since 2005 and has previously proven her reliability and seaworthiness with a transatlantic crossing and many extended passages.

2 1/2 Ton Sloop
2015 Puffin in Mears Boatyard

The time has come for ‘Puffin’ to try and find a new home having been in current ownership
since 2008. Believed, but not confirmed to be, the ‘Puffin’ referred to in Ray Whittaker’s
book ‘Two and a Half Ton Dream’. She was featured in a PBO article (Issue 403 published in
July 2000) whilst in the ownership of Dan Darwell and Alex Henderson.
Taken on as a damaged non-runner she has been out of the water since 2008 and has been
undergoing the world’s slowest restoration for the past 13 years. The challenges of raising
two children has meant that work has pretty much ground to a standstill and it is time to let
somebody else take up the baton. She is still a very realistic prospect for completion by
someone with the time and energy to devote to her and whilst there are still plenty of jobs
on the ‘to do’ list most if not all are well within the reach of the industrious and
appropriately equipped DIYer.
‘Puffin’ comes with a full inventory and quite a few spares purchased for the restoration and
is offered in the spirit of a ‘job lot’. She has a partially stripped down Yanmar 1GM10 engine
with stainless steel shaft driving a two blade bronze propeller. The engine is currently out of
the boat on a custom built workstand. The rig is fractional bermudan with stainless steel
diamond stays. Sails are tan red with a boom furling main and a roller furling headsail.
The hull is carvel planked and has been partially stripped back to bare wood and re-painted.
Some of the caulking will need redoing and well as re-paying the seams. One hull plank has
been replaced along with three of the 5 keel bolts by Mears Boatyard. Ballast comprises a
cast iron external keel augmented by a selection of internal cast pig iron ballast bricks. The
interior is partially stripped out.
The mast is a hollow box section wooden mast in fair condition that has been regularly
varnished over the years. The boom and bowsprit are solid timber, both also varnished and
in good condition. A new bumpkin has been made and is partially finished as have the
spreaders. The originals are all still available and included.
The asking price of £1 for ‘Puffin’ includes all of the existing inventory and material relevant
to the intended works. She is currently ‘lying’ in PL19, West Devon on a RM Trailers 3500kg
braked twin axle boat trailer. I am happy to help deliver the yacht to the home or a yard of
the buyer’s choice (within reason) where she can be craned off at the buyer’s expense and
keep the trailer myself to sell on or I can include the trailer in the sale for £2000. The trailer
has by my estimation saved me several times its original £4.5k purchase cost in storage fees
since 2010.

8 Ton Sloop

Windflower 01

LOA : 30' LWL : 27' Beam : 9' 1" Draught : 4' 9" Displacement : 8 tons TM
Lloyds Registered : N° 163440
Rob McCall is selling his 1933 8 ton sloop Windflower. He has owned her for 2 years and
although he has not been able to give her the time and investment she needs she has not
deteriorated in his ownership - he says if she had remained as she was when he bought her,
she may not still be here today. The weather has been kept off her decks and
superstructure completely using 100% waterproof tarps with a lightweight timber custom tent
frame beneath. In this manner she has “slept in the yard” where she is currently to be found
in Llandysul, Carmarthenshire.
However she now needs to find a new home urgently.
